Es1102 Summary Exercise On "The Double Edge Of Globalization."

In “The Double Edge of Globalization” (Chanda, 2007) states that globalization brought about positive and negative impacts and improvement in cooperation among influential parties in the world is paramount in dealing with these negative impacts, which is a global affair.

Positive impacts consist of industrialization, increased trade among countries and split-second relaying of information worldwide. However, industrialization and increased trade also resulted in adverse environmental impacts such as deforestation, pollution and global warming.

These adverse environmental effects are not localized and are thus a global concern. Efforts by non-governmental organizations in alleviating environmental impacts have had limited success due to their lack of influence. Therefore, to ensure better success at dealing with environmental impacts, countries, global powerhouses and international bodies in the world should learn from past success. For example, The Montreal Protocol, where cooperation among countries and international bodies led to the reduction in size of the ozone hole.

  1. Hey Chin Hwee!

Thank you for posting your summary early, I really appreciate the effort (:

There are a few comments that I would like to make :

    1) I felt that the first paragraph should be split into two sentences. For example 'In "The Double Edge of Globalisation", (Chanda,2007), the article states that globalisation brought about positive and negative impacts on the world. One way to deal with the negative impacts is to have an improvement in cooperation among the influential parties of the world.'

    2) The first sentence of the third paragraph can be phrased as "These adverse environmental effects are not localised. Thus, it becomes a global concern."

    Cheers!

    Chelsea (:

  2. Hi Chin Hwee. Thank you for clear summary. Here are some opinions from me: =)
In “The Double Edge of Globalization” (Chandra,2007) states that globalization brought about…>> In “The Double Edge of Globalization”, Chanda (2007) states that globalization has brought about..
However, industrialization and increased trade also resulted in adverse environmental impacts>> However, industrialization and increased trade also result in adverse environmental impacts
These adverse environmental effects are not localized and are thus a global concern>> These adverse environmental effects are not localized and thus, raise global concern.
At last, thanks for your effort. =)

  3. Hi Chin Hwee,

Thank you for the effort! (:

So down to business, I think for the 1st paragraph you can change it to:

In “The Double Edge of Globalization” (Chanda, 2007) states that globalization brought about positive and negative impacts. Improved cooperation among influential parties in the world is of paramount importance in dealing with these global negative impacts.

Again, thanks for the summary! ^^

  4. Hi Chin Hwee! Thanks for the detailed summary!

Here are some of my comments on your summary:

    1) As suggested by others above, maybe you could rephrase the paragraph so that it would be clearer :)

    2) "Positive impacts consist of industrialization, increased trade among countries and split-second relaying of information worldwide. However, industrialization and increased trade also resulted in adverse environmental impacts such as deforestation, pollution and global warming. "

Maybe you could change it to :

"The increase in trade and industrialisation, due to globalisation, has resulted in adverse environmental impacts such as deforestation, pollution and global warming"

    3) "Efforts by non-governmental organizations in alleviating environmental impacts have had limited success due to their lack of influence."
    { maybe you could change the "impacts" to "threats" }

    4) "Therefore, to ensure better success at dealing with environmental impacts,"
{Therefore, to ensure a better outcome in dealing with the environmental threats..." (not sure, sorry)

Ok, that's all from me! Thanks!
